Our areas of El Porvenir and Gallinas were devastated by the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire, which started on April 6, 2022 and by last count had consumed over 342,000 acres and was only contained in August. The fire destroyed several homes less than a mile from our base camp and recent rains have made the road up into the canyon impassable. You will see evidence of this on your way through the canyon to Gallinas. We were fortunate that the wind changed before it could reach our land and spared us from the worst of the fire. We are determined to rise from the ashes as quickly as possible and these cultural camp outs are a way for us to create a sustainable local economy for ourselves and our neighbors.
